What are self-adhesive resin films suitable for?
Self-adhesive decorative films are a quick way to add holographic shine or realistic “water surface” ripple effects (turquoise / blue) to resin projects. They work great as a background for jewellery beds, under a clear top coat for coasters and flat decorations, and as an eye-catching layer in resin art.
How to achieve a clean, bubble-free finish
- Dry, smooth surface: degrease the surface and wipe away any dust (with a microfibre cloth or isopropyl alcohol).
- Careful application: apply from one edge and push out any air with a soft squeegee.
- Sealing: for durability, cover the film with 1–2 mm of clear resin (top coat).
- Edges: “lock” the edges with a thin layer of resin to prevent them from peeling off over time.
Tip: Need to apply the film around a curve? Briefly gently heat it (low heat) and shape it over the edge using a soft spatula. Stick to the resin surface only after complete curing.
Basic step-by-step procedure
- Prepare the base (degreased, smooth surface, dust-free).
- Cut the film to the desired shape and size.
- Peel off part of the backing, apply to the edge and gradually push the air outwards.
- Press the edges firmly. If shaping is needed, use short, gentle heating.
- Cover with clear resin (1–2 mm), let it harden under a dust cover.
Pro tip: For coasters, first pour a thin clear film (to even out imperfections), after hardening, apply the film and only then apply the final layer. You'll get a perfectly smooth, glossy surface without 'maps'.
Recommended clear resins for coating
- Subglaso Rapid 10-5-220 – quick projects and coasters.
- DEKORA 20-24-950 – universal clear resin for medium decorations.
- Lente Portreto Rapid 3-8-3200 – resin art, when you want more time for effects.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I glue the film directly onto uncured resin?
We do not recommend it. The adhesive does not stick as well and maps may form. Stick to a completely hardened and degreased surface, then lock with a thin clear layer (top coat).
How do I prevent chipping on the edges?
Press the edges well, or briefly heat them when shaping. After gluing, coat the edge with a thin layer of resin and after gelation, apply the final top coat of 1–2 mm.
Is 'water surface' also suitable for jewellery?
Yes, it works great as a background for jewellery beds. After gluing, cover it with clear resin for depth and scratch resistance.
