Decorative materials for resin art

For some resin projects, you'll need decorative materials. Clear casting resin captures beauty in its crystal-clear world.

Decorative materials for crystal resin can be used for resin jewellery, in the production of various pendants, earrings and bracelets, coasters, bowls and dishes, or orgonites. Next up are silicone resin moulds, decorative materials and crystal resin.

Clear epoxy resin encapsulates dried flowers, glitter, pebbles, pieces of exotic wood, gold foil, glass chips and shells. There's so much we can use in our resin creations.

Dried flowers for resin deserve special attention. For their preparation, you can use a special gel to dry them, and for large castings, you will need large silicone moulds. These larger projects will appreciate high-quality casting resin designed for embedding dried flowers.

What are decorative materials for resin and when to use them

Decorative materials for resin are accessories that give your products an original look – from dried flowers to glitter, metallic powders, stones, gold foils, glass grits to shells and pieces of wood. Clear casting resin encloses their structure and colour in a 'crystal world', from which jewellery, pendants, earrings, bracelets, coasters, jars, bowls or orgonites are created.

What is most often cast

  • dried flowers (ideally dried in gel / silica gel to preserve shape and colour),
  • glitter and glitter for resin, metallic and chameleon powders,
  • gold/metallic foils, flakes, leaves,
  • stones, glass grit, beads, shells,
  • small wood (walnut, olive, exotic woods) and natural materials.
Tip: For lightweight decorations (e.g. leaves, foil flakes), cast in two steps: first a very thin 'adhesive' film of resin, then add to the full height after gelation. This will prevent the decorations from floating. This will prevent the decorations from floating.

How to prepare materials to keep them beautifully clear

  • Dryness is key: both flowers and wood must be completely dry. Moisture = bubbles and clouding.
  • Cleanliness: dust and grease multiply in the resin. Wipe and degrease surfaces before casting.
  • Layering: build more distinctive compositions in multiple thinner layers – you'll gain depth and control over bubbles.
  • Temperature: mix the compound slowly and at room temperature; bubbles will then escape easily.

Which resin to choose for your project

Pro tip: Lightly roughen and degrease metal components (beds, crimping material) before casting. For porous natural materials, a thin layer of primer of resin will help – it closes the pores and reduces bubbles.

Safety and care of the finished product

  • Wear gloves, protect the work surface and ventilate.
  • Protect the fresh casting from dust and temperature shocks; it achieves its full properties after complete curing.
  • Do not place finished decorations on hot surfaces; clean them with a soft cloth for long-lasting shine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I embed fresh flowers?
We do not recommend it. Fresh flowers contain water and may turn brown or mould in the resin. Always dry them first (ideally in a drying gel) and only then embed them.
How do I prevent light decorations from floating?
Embed in stages – a thin 'adhesive' layer, then top up after gelation. A thicker mixture or gentle weighting (pin, tweezers) that you remove after gelation will also help.
What about bubbles?
Mix slowly, and keep decorations dry and warm. After pouring, briefly blow warm air over the surface (carefully) or use a needle to release larger bubbles near flowers and wood.
How to achieve bright colours and metallic effects?
Dose the colour in drops; for shine and sparkle, use metallic/chameleon powders or glitters. Build effects in layers – a bottom 'mist', a main motif in the middle, and fine sparkles on top for a spatial impression.
