Resin jewellery components – selection, compatibility and assembly
High-quality jewellery components are the foundation of a professional impression and the long life of the jewellery. Hypoallergenic stainless/surgical steel and carefully selected dimensions are particularly suitable for resin castings. Proper connection prevents the pendant from loosening, prevents discolouration and ensures comfortable wearing.
Materials and surface finishes
- Stainless steel / surgical steel – durable, hypoallergenic, minimal maintenance, suitable for everyday wear.
- Treated brass (rhodium-plated, gold-plated, rose) – wide range of metal colours and elegant appearance.
- Jewellery metals – ideal for creative projects, choose 'nickel free' options for skin contact.
Dimensions and compatibility with the casting
Follow the inner diameter of the ring vs. the hole in the casting and the wire thickness. For small pendants, rings of 4–6 mm (wire 0.8–1.0 mm) are often sufficient, for larger jewellery 7–8 mm. Choose bails according to the thickness of the casting and the planned size of the chain.
- Earring hooks (afro) – a universal choice for drop earrings.
- Studs – 6–12 mm plates for gluing smaller castings; use quality stoppers.
- Chains – common lengths 45/50/60 cm, with the option of an extension chain.
- Fastenings – carabiners, spring rings; choose the metal colour according to the pigmentation of the jewellery.
Joining, gluing and drilling
Before gluing, degrease the surfaces (isopropyl alcohol) and lightly roughen them with a fine abrasive – this will improve adhesion. Drill the castings with a micro drill (typically 0.8–1.2 mm) at low speed. Open the rings sideways (do not pull apart), tighten the seating with nylon jaw pliers.
Maintenance and wearing comfort
- Avoid contact with chlorine, perfume and showers – this will extend the life of the surface finish.
- Polish with a soft cloth, store in a dry place and away from direct sunlight.
- For sensitive skin, prefer stainless steel / surgical steel and silicone stoppers.
