Pigments for the "sea" effect

Pigments for Sea Wave Effect (Wave-pro)

The Wave-pro effect pigment helps create realistic sea waves with lacing and delicate cells in clear casting resin. Great for boards, serving trays, paintings, and other coastal-themed decorations. Mix the loose powder into a small portion of resin and apply in a thin line to a surface resembling the sea, then blow with a hairdryer or heat gun across the "surface" and outwards. Works best with art resin with higher viscosity.

How the effect works

The Pigment Wave-pro is a special effect powder for creating white foam and lace at the 'wave' interface. When puffed over a base (darker sea, lighter coast), it creates a contrasting line and fine cell/lace structures typical of sea waves.

Basic procedure (step by step)

  1. Prepare the base in shades of the sea: dark blue/turquoise, transitioning to sand near the shore.
  2. Mix Wave-pro powder into a small amount of clear resin (start with a small amount) and mix until smooth.
  3. Apply a thin line of pigmented mixture to the edge of the 'wave'.
  4. Blow across the surface towards the shore (hair dryer/heat gun), using short strokes to open the lace.
  5. Gently refine the shape of the wave, adding additional thin layers for more depth if needed.

Dosage and compatibility

  • Start with a small amount of powder (a pinch per small cup) and add gradually – the effect is pronounced.
  • An art casting resin with a higher density and sufficient working time is ideal.
  • For sharper lace, work when the mixture begins to slightly gel (no longer completely runny).

Tips for the best result

  • Darker 'sea' and lighter 'sand' will accentuate the white foam.
  • Blow with low/medium power from a short distance; shorter pulses will open the lace more evenly.
  • Keep the work surface horizontal; unevenness will cause running and breakage of the lace.
  • For multiple waves, layer thin lines behind each other and briefly blow each one.
Warning: Do not overheat the resin – it may yellow or scorch the surface. Too much powder can reduce clarity and prolong curing. Always test on a small sample first.
