Metallic powders

Metallic (Pearlescent) Powders for Resin

Metallic powders are made from mica infused with metals and then ground into a fine powder. They are used for filling casting resin and create a metallic/pearlescent appearance – ideal for paintings, table tops and other decorations. The base is clear casting resin (e.g. PourArt). Metallic powders accelerate curing – we recommend first colouring the pre-weighed amount of resin and only then adding the hardener just before pouring. Metallic powders make the resin opaque.

What they do and where they excel

  • Pearlescent-metallic effect with rich reflections; excellent for veining, accents and full-surface coverage.
  • Great for resin art, coasters, table tops, decorations and jewellery.
  • The result is opaque (solid), with significant depth and a metallic sheen.

Dosage and mixing

  • Start with a small amount, usually 1–5% of the weight of the mixed resin (A+B); add in small pinches.
  • Workflow for longer pot life: colour the resin A alone, then mix in hardener B just before pouring.
  • Mix slowly for minimum bubbles; after mixing, let the mixture stand briefly.

Working with the effect

  • For veins and lines, pour from a slightly thickened mixture – it holds its shape better.
  • On large surfaces, combine metallic zones with clear/translucent ones for greater depth.
  • After curing, we recommend a thin clear coat (glaze) for a smooth, durable surface.

What to watch out for

  • Accelerated curing: metallic powders can shorten the processing time – prepare everything in advance.
  • Sedimentation: heavier particles may sink – work in a reasonable layer and time, or gently mix the mixture.
  • Compatibility: always do a small test when combining with other pigments.
Warning: Do not exceed the recommended dosage – excess can prolong or disrupt curing and worsen the surface. Work in a clean, dust-free environment and protect your airways when handling the powder.
