Pearlescent powders

Pearlescent (mica) powders for resin

Pearlescent powder is made from mica steamed with metals and then finely ground into a powder. The particles change colour depending on the angle of light and viewing angle (AB effect), so the product optically shimmers when rotated. The powders are used to fill casting resin and create a shimmering, pearlescent-metallic look for pictures, jewellery and decorations. Pearlescent powders make the casting resin opaque.

How to Achieve a Pearlescent Effect

  • Full Colouring – mix into freshly mixed resin (A+B) to a maximum of ~5% by weight. You'll get an opaque, pearlescent shimmering look.
  • Dry Brushing the Mould – lightly dust the silicone mould with a fine brush and pour in black tinted resin. The effect will remain on the surface and the colour shift will be greatly enhanced.
  • Thin Glaze – micro-amount of pearl in a thin top layer and a clear coat over it for a smooth, durable surface.

Tips for the Most Striking Shine

  • Dark Base (ideally black) enhances the AB/duochrome effect; it will be more subtle on a light base.
  • Mix slowly to avoid bubbles; after mixing, let the mixture stand briefly.
  • Layering thin coats adds depth without excess pigment.

Dosage and compatibility

  • Recommended amount: typically 1–5% (start with a pinch, the effect is pronounced).
  • Can be combined with other pigments (liquid colours, metallic powders) – always do a small test for compatibility.
  • For large areas, plan for even thickness; too thin a layer may have less shine.
Warning: Pearlescent powders make the casting resin opaque. Do not exceed the recommended doses – excess may prolong or disrupt curing and worsen the surface. Work in a clean, dust-free environment, protect your airways when handling the powder.
