Waxes and Oils for Tables and Boards – When and Why to Reach for Them
Waxes and oils are ideal for treating and enhancing wood on tables and boards – whether they are standalone wooden ones or in combination with epoxy resin. Oil penetrates the surface, enhances the structure and creates a natural look. Wax adds a smooth, pleasantly satin to glossy finish and improves water repellency, making the surface easier to maintain.
Oil, wax or hard wax oil?
- Oil – deep enhancement of the grain, natural look, easy to restore locally.
- Wax – smooth 'velvety' touch to the surface, better water and dirt repellency.
- Hard wax oil – combination of benefits: more durable surface, excellent maintenance, suitable for dining and worktops.
Compatibility with epoxy and wood
Waxes and oils are primarily intended for wooden parts. On fully hardened epoxy, they function more as maintenance polishes (reviving gloss, easier wiping) rather than absorbent impregnation. If you want a distinctly high 'mirror' gloss on the entire board, consider a final flood coat layer of resin; our epoxy consumption calculator is useful for estimating material.
Application and maintenance
- Preparation: sand the surface to a fine finish (typically P180–P320), thoroughly dust off and degrease.
- Application: Apply a thin, even layer, rubbing in with a cloth/pad in circular motions along the grain.
- Wiping off excess: After the application time, wipe dry to prevent sticky spots.
- Layers: For oils, 1–3 depending on absorbency; wax can be polished after drying for a higher gloss.
- Maintenance: Regular cleaning with a slightly damp cloth, occasional refresher coat or polishing.
Contact with food and safety
If the board will be in contact with food (dining or serving table), choose products with a declaration of suitability for contact with food and observe the prescribed curing times. Work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves and use clean, dust-free cloths.
